I have always been fascinated by cats! They have an incredible body structure, amazing balance and agility and for their sizes, an amazing speed!

Here’s some really interesting information on cats!

A cats purr is still considered a mystery with many different opinions on “why” they purr and what is the meaning of purring. The sound, although recognized , is elusive! This is partly because the cat has no unique feature that is responsible for the sound!

It is widely believed that a cat’s purr is a part of cat communication. It varies between cats and from species to species, but can be characterized as a tonal buzzing. Domestic cats purr in a frequency of 25 to 150 vibrations per second.

The cat (Felis catus), also known as the domestic cat or housecat is valued by humans for companionship, their ability to hunt vermin and pests. Cats have been associated with humans for at least 9,500 years and are the most popular pet in the world. Owing to their close association with humans, cats are now found almost everywhere on Earth.

Cats are blessed with strong, flexible bodies, quick reflexes, sharp retractable claws, and teeth adapted to killing small prey. As nocturnal predators, cats use their acute hearing and ability to see in near darkness to locate prey. Not only can cats hear sounds too faint for human ears, they can also hear sounds higher in frequency than humans can perceive. This is because cats’ usual prey, such as rodents such as mice, make high frequency noises, so cats’ hearing has evolved to pinpoint these faint high-pitched sounds. Cats rely more on smell than taste, and have a vastly better sense of smell than humans.

Despite being solitary hunters, cats are a social species and use a variety of vocalizations, pheromones and types of body language for communication. These include meowing, purring, trilling, hissing, growling, and grunting!

The earliest direct evidence of cat domestication is a kitten that was buried alongside a human 9,500 years ago in Cyprus

Cat Facts:

A cat has 230 bones in their body.
Cats have four rows of whiskers. These whiskers help a cat determine if a space is too small for them to squeeze through. They are similar to antennas that aid the cat’s judgment of the width of the area they wish to crawl through.
Cats do not have sweat glands.
A cat’s brain is closer related to human’s brains than a dog’s brain.
Cat’s ears can pivot 180 degrees.
The cat’s heartbeat is twice as fast as humans at 110 to 140 beats per minute.
The normal body temperature of a cat is 101.5 degrees Fahrenheit.
An adult cat has 30 teeth.
Adult cats usually have about 12 whiskers.

A Cat can jump seven times its height or higher
Running, a cat can clock in around 31 miles per hour
A cat can not see directly under his or her nose, which is why they might not see a treat that is placed on the floor!
A cat can see around 6 times better than a human because of extra reflecting cells that absorb light!
