Cats, by nature, are very clean animals, they wash constantly and expect their living environment to also be clean. If you are noticing that your cat is peeing elsewhere, chances are his or her litter box is a mess. If you put off this simple chore of cleaning the litter box, chances are kitty will look elsewhere to urinate! Alternatives to Litter Box Cleaning are probably in order!
Litter boxes should be scooped out daily and needs to be changed at least weekly, depending on the number of cats you have. It only takes a few minutes but it is a necessary task for a number of reasons.
A dirty litter box can also be unhealthy for your cat – afterall this is fecal. A dirty litter box can draw fleas, ticks and other pests that can harm your cat as well as you!
There many great alternatives to litter box cleaning that none of us enjoy doing. Investing in a self-cleaning system could be the answer for you. Although the initial investment can range from moderate to expensive, in the long run it truly is the best way to go. Not only is it cleaner, safer for kitty but also removes the chore of cleaning a litter box every day.
Although this will make for a slightly longer posting, I thought I should give you some ideas for alternatives to litter box cleaning. Here are a few devices that I have looked into that have received good reviews and truly do work:
CatGenie 120 Self Washing Self Flushing Cat Box
Available at Amazon: $279 & eligible for FREE Shipping
An outstanding concept, which delivers far more than the 1st generation
First, I must admit I am hooked on this product, despite all of the many problems I USED to have with the 1st generation (see my 3 star review for the 1st generation, Cat Genie ) – try it, being forewarned that it might require a bit of effort up front, depending on your hook up connection, and the cats’ affinity for using the unit.
PetSafe Simply Clean Continuous Clean Litter Box
Available at Amazon: $82.13 eligible for FREE Shipping
This Scoop Free Automatic Litter Box is a completely touch-free system that offers unbeatable odor control and can be left alone for up to 30 days without scooping, cleaning or refilling. The included litter cartridge absorbs odor and moisture on contact, and after your cat leaves the litter box, the ultra-quiet Scoop Free automatically rakes the waste into a covered trap, leaving the litter bed smelling clean and fresh.
We have had this box for a week now and even though I normally have 5 cat boxes for our 4 indoor cats I decided to just use this one to see how it would hold up with 4 cats using it. It is pretty darn good! Our cats range in weight from 22lbs down to 12 lbs and though it says for cats to 12lbs our 22 lb cat has had no problem using it at all! ..
Omega Paw Self-Cleaning Litter Box
Available on Amazon: 26.99 – 34.99
You will use less litter with this box and there is less odor. It is a very economical litter box and never dread cleaning this litter box. You have to use the clumping litter. I would recommend getting the large box as the regular size is very small and would only accommodate a kitten or very small cat.
This cat box would be worth $100 in my opinion. I cant believe how easy it is to use, less then 10 seconds to cleans the litter box, no removing the lid. Throw away the scoops as you will never need it once you own this cat box. No smell, no bags, no mess. Even for someone with a bad back it would only require bending over. You roll it upside down, and the cleaning is done….

The Litter Robot is the automatic, self cleaning litter box for cats ‘that really works’. When your cat enters the litter chamber (globe) a weight activated sensor detects the presence of your cat. After 7 minutes a clean cycle starts with the slow rotation of the globe in a counter-clockwise direction. The rotation of the globe sifts and separates clumps from the clean litter (clumping litter) and deposits all waste in the large capacity drawer lined with a standard kitchen garbage bag. The globe then returns to its home position with a clean, level bed of litter ready for the next use. The Litter Robot has no rakes or wires to jam, clog, or break. Its simplicity and durable construction ensure a long life of service. The Litter Robot operates on 12VDC and is easy to set up – just add litter to the globe and plug it in
After going through 4 of the rake-type automatic litter boxes (DON’T EVER BUY ONE) in less than two years, I decided to try the Litter Robot. I should have done it two years ago and saved myself a lot of money and frustration!
To give you some specifics, we are a 5 cat (adults) household, males & females (all neutered), ranging from 6 to 15 pounds. They all took to it with very little or no trouble at all.
Although I have covered these products on Amazon, I have also included links below for Petco and Petsmart. I support both of these fine stores whole-heartedly!
