Cats have always seemed a little mysterious to people.  Their behavior leaves us wondering “why is he/she doing that?”  Understanding your cat’s behavior will bring a clear understanding of what makes them tick and what they need in order to be happy.

Well, like all animals, there is always a means to everything.  Let’s take a look at some of the common behavioral issues with our cats.

Why is My Cat in the Hottest Spot in the House?

Cats are forever seeking out the warmest spot in your home, whether it’s a window, a fireplace or under your covers.  Cats are “heat seekers”, their body temperature is higher than humans (38.6 °C 101.5 °F) and what seems very warm to you, is not warm enough for your friend.  Lying in a window, for instance, allows the warmth of the sun to capture into their fur and remain for quite a good amount of time.

Why is He Making Chattering Noises?

When your friend is sitting in a window and staring out, chances are he has spied something that triggers his natural hunting instincts.  Usually, in our modern world, it’s a bird.  Cats instinctively make a sound that is very close to chattering.  In prides, their larger cousins make this sound to let others in the pride know that food is within sight. With domestic cats it could mean something of interest has stirred him.

My Cat Rubs Up Against Everything – Including Me! What On Earth Is That About?

Cats are extremely territorial.  That said, cats have glands on both sides of their faces.  These glands secrete a scent that marks the object or person.  This tells other cats “this is mine! Stay Away!”  Also while rubbing their faces up against you or objects they leave saliva which also leaves a scent to other cats that this is now owned.  Now, if you have multiple cats, they will all do the same thing thereby passing the gauntlet back and forth.  Consider yourself honored!

You might notice when company comes by, your cat will rub up against them performing this same ritual.  What they are doing is bringing this strange new encounter into the fold, making them a part of his or her territory!  Your guests should be honored!

My Cat Would Play 24/7 If He Didn’t Need Rest!

There are two reasons your cat plays.  One and the most obvious is they love to play!  It’s great exercise and they need to burn off their unending supply of energy.  Never take their toys away from them!  If you do, they will go after your belongings and in many cases start breaking things.

The second reason cats play is a little more complex.  Cats in the wild constantly test their hunting skills.  By playing with a string, a cat toy, etc., they are testing their hunting and capturing skills.  When they pounce on a toy they are testing their ability to capture the prey.

Cats have many behaviors that we as humans find very odd. Yet, the longer you live with your friend you will find there is a reason for all of his or her behaviors.  By paying attention and understanding your cat’s behavior, will help you  bond with them and that understanding  will make your friend ever so happy.
